Here's my predicition: Since Faecbook and Google say they are joining together in the Data Portability initiative, Google stops development on Open Social (which is really just an embryo compared to the feature-packed Facebook API and Platform) and makes the Facebook platform THE DEFINITIVE 3RD PARTY DEVELOPER PLATFORM WITH SOCIAL PORTABILITY BETWEEN ALL NETWORKS.

 

Why else would they joing together in this sort of initiative? The Facebook Platform and API will become Open Social....Think about it: Facebook announced about a month and a half ago that they would allow other websites to use the Facebook API in their site. In essence, this makes the Facebook API just like Open Social, but 10 times better since it is already far more advanced and already has thousands of apps developed for it. That's my prediction.

It all sounds so easy...and makes a great deal of sense...just don't underestimate the capacity of Microsoft (which owns some of facebook) to throw a spanner in the works to piss off Google.

I reckon it is more likely to end up as partial implementation - MS picking the bits they like, but not being fully open social compliant (netscape, explorer and HTML in the bad old days springs to mind!).

Awesome prediction! It makes a lot of sense for Microsoft to get into the social game like this. It would be a way for them to skip a few steps and makeup for all their lost efforts in the social world.
